Module 01·The Spirit & Mindset

“With bamboo cane and straw sandals, lighter than a steed; Who fears? A life in misty rain leaves me untamed.”

「竹杖芒鞋轻胜马,谁怕?一蓑烟雨任平生。」

Built during Su Shi's second tenure as prefect of Hangzhou in 1089 using lakebed silt from historic dredging. Walking this 2.8 km causeway at dawn cuts through the modern noise of digital burnout. Between the trembling willow branches and the silver mist rising from West Lake, you inhabit the poet's resilient state of mind—finding stillness not by fleeing storms, but by strolling lightly through them.

Bianjing (Kaifeng)

In 1057 Su Shi and his younger brother Su Zhe both passed the imperial examination. Chief examiner Ouyang Xiu, reading Su Shi's essay on clemency and reward, suspected it was his own student's work and ranked it second to avoid favouritism—only to find the name Su Shi when the seals were broken. 'I must step aside and give this man room in front,' Ouyang Xiu said. In a single spring the three Sus became the talk of the capital.

Fengxiang

In 1061 Su Shi entered office through the special decree examination with a third-class rating—a result awarded only once before in more than a century of Northern Song rule. Appointed signing official at Fengxiang, he spent three years clearing backlogs, reviewing prisoners across four counties, and working and praying for rain through drought. Here he learned his first lesson in government: the landscape of a poem and the people in a docket are two faces of the same thing.

📜Classical Inscription & Verse

Bianjing (Kaifeng)

Returning to court in 1069 just as Wang Anshi's reforms gathered pace, Su Shi submitted memorial after memorial against abrupt change, arguing for reform by degrees. A censor in Wang's faction promptly accused him of trading in salt and dye-wood while carrying his father's coffin home—unproven, but signal enough. He asked for a provincial post instead.

📜Classical Inscription & Verse

“The pursuit of order is too hasty, the counsels taken too broad, the men advanced too sharply.”

Hangzhou

Arriving in 1071 as the reform's opponent-in-exile, Su Shi spent three years as Hangzhou's assistant prefect, walking the lake in every weather and writing the lines that made West Lake immortal. It was here, half-drunk on a boat, that the thought first took hold: this lake needs dredging properly.

📜Classical Inscription & Verse

“If West Lake were the Lady Xishi, light makeup or rich adornment would always suit her.”

Mizhou

Facing drought, locusts, and famine on the windswept plains of Shandong, Su Shi climbed the Chao Ran (Transcendence) Terrace under the Mid-Autumn full moon. Longing for his younger brother Ziyou, he drank wine and penned the timeless poem on human solitude and cosmic connection.

When the Yellow River breached its banks threatening to engulf Xuzhou, Governor Su Shi donned woven reeds, slept in thatched huts atop the city walls, and directed seventy days of desperate flood fighting until the ramparts held firm, earning the eternal devotion of the citizens.

Su Shi: The Stoic Odyssey of Eastern Equanimity

To walk in Su Shi's footsteps is to learn the ancient art of radical resilience. Where Roman Stoics disciplined themselves in austere tents, Su Shi cooked pork, dredged lakes, and celebrated thunderstorms in straw sandals. Walking his causeway at dawn is a masterclass in transforming external crises into inner grace.

🎋Aesthetic Landscape: A misty watercolor world where weeping willows drape over calm jade water, lotus leaves shimmer in the rain, and wooden oars rhythmically slice the silence.
⚖️Western Parallel & Comparative Insight

Marcus Aurelius & Seneca (Stoic Resilience)

Where Roman Stoics practiced austere self-control, Su Shi weaponized expansive humor, civic building, and poetic transcendence against catastrophic misfortune.

🌿The Somatic Walking Experience · Five Senses on the Trail

“Walk the 2.8 km Su Causeway before 07:15 AM in light drizzle. Watch the white egrets skim across the jade waters of West Lake through the curtains of weeping willows. The scent of wet lotus leaves and morning pine needles calms modern anxiety before any city noise begins.”
