The rule in one breath
Citizens of 50+ eligible countries may enter China without a visa for up to 240 hours when transiting to a third country or region. You enter through one of the designated open ports, may travel within the permitted provinces, and must leave to a destination that is not the country you arrived from. Rules and eligible passports change — verify with the National Immigration Administration before booking.
The 'direct transit' myth
You do not need a connecting boarding pass for the whole journey. What matters is a confirmed onward ticket to a third country/region and the transit purpose. Travellers routinely fly in from London, walk the Shu Roads for nine days, and fly out from Chengdu to Bangkok.
Registering every bed you sleep in
Foreigners must register within 24 hours of each arrival. Hotels do it at check-in automatically; rural guesthouses and homestays sometimes do not — ask for the registration slip (临时住宿登记表), or register at the local police station. Carry it; rail stations and ports may ask.
Quick Answers
Which passports qualify for 240-hour transit?+
50+ countries including most of the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea. The list is amended by the National Immigration Administration — check it before booking, not after.
Can I enter and leave from the same city?+
The departure must be to a third country or region different from your arrival origin; returning to your origin country on the same ticket defeats the transit claim.
Can I take domestic high-speed trains during visa-free transit?+
Yes, within the provinces permitted for your entry port. Your passport works for 12306 booking and station gates exactly as with any visa.
What happens if I overstay 240 hours?+
Overstay means unlawful presence: fines, possible entry bans, and a stain on future applications. Set an alarm for the exact deadline and book the exit ticket first.
