Privacy Policy

We keep data collection to the strict minimum. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, and the control you have over your information.

Effective: September 11, 2026Version 1.0✉ [email protected]

1. Who We Are and What This Policy Covers

WalkingChina ("WalkingChina", "we", "us", "our") operates walkingchina.com, a self-guided cultural walking platform that publishes historical trail guides, GPX tracks, and field notes for international travellers.

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the rights and choices available to you. It applies to this website and to any content or digital guide we publish.

2. Information We Collect

We deliberately keep data collection to the minimum required to serve you. We do not operate user accounts, we do not run advertising trackers, and we do not build behavioural profiles.

  • •Information you choose to give us — the display name, email address, selected journey, trail date, and reflection you enter in the "Share Your Story" form.
  • •Files you send us voluntarily — GPS tracks (GPX/FIT) and photographs you email to [email protected].
  • •Limited technical logs — our hosting and content-delivery provider (Cloudflare) automatically records standard request data such as IP address, browser user agent, requested URL, and timestamp, for security, abuse prevention, and reliability.
  • •No account credentials and no payment card data are collected, because the website currently provides neither user accounts nor paid checkout.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • •To produce and deliver the personalised commemorative ink map and digital seal you request.
  • •To answer your questions and provide support, including questions about billing or a charge.
  • •To protect the website against abuse, fraud, and malicious traffic.
  • •To comply with applicable legal obligations.
  • •To understand aggregate, non-identifying interest so we can improve our guides.

4. What We Do Not Do

  • •We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
  • •We do not run third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
  • •We do not publish your name, reflection, or photographs without your consent.
  • •We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.

5. Third-Party Services

We rely on a small number of trusted providers. Each processes data under its own terms and privacy policy.

  • •Cloudflare — hosting, content delivery, security, and object storage (R2) for media assets.
  • •YouTube (privacy-enhanced "nocookie" embeds) — some pages embed video; the nocookie domain limits tracking until you choose to play.
  • •Outbound links to rail, mapping, audio, and partner websites — those services are governed by their own policies, not this one.

6. International Data Transfers

Our infrastructure is distributed globally through Cloudflare. By using the website, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, where data-protection rules may differ.

7. Data Retention

We keep form submissions and email correspondence only for as long as necessary to fulfil your request, and then archive or delete them. Security and access logs are retained briefly and used only for protection and troubleshooting.

8. Your Rights

Depending on where you live — for example the EEA or UK under the GDPR, or California under the CCPA/CPRA — you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal information, and to request data portability.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law, normally within 30 days.

9. Security

We protect your information with HTTPS in transit, edge security protections, and least-privilege access to any data we hold. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children's Privacy

The website and our guides are intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Effective" date shown at the top of this page, and we will record material changes on our Changelog page.

12. Contact Us

If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or how your information is handled, contact us at [email protected].

This is a summary of our privacy practices for the website. If a specific feature or future paid product requires additional disclosure, we will state it explicitly at the point of collection.
