The setup takes ten minutes
Install Alipay (支付宝) or WeChat, register with your foreign number, and add your Visa, Mastercard, or other major card under 'Cards'. Identity verification is in-app. Both apps now support direct foreign-card payments at the full merchant network — the old 'Tour Pass' wallet workaround is obsolete.
Where QR cash still wins — and doesn't
Expect 0–3% card fees on some foreign-issued cards above certain amounts, and keep 200–500 RMB cash for mountain villages, temple donations, and the rare vendor whose QR code is a personal card. Everything else — taxis, trains, teahouses, trailhead parking — is a two-second scan.
Didi without a Chinese phone number
The Didi mini-program inside Alipay/WeChat works with your foreign number and international card, and offers an English interface with in-app chat translation for drivers — pair it with the bilingual driver flashcards on our journeys.
Quick Answers
Do I need a Chinese bank account for Alipay?+
No. Foreign Visa/Mastercard/JCB cards link directly for QR payments; no Chinese bank account or local SIM is required.
Are there payment limits for foreign cards?+
Single-transaction caps exist for foreign cards (around ¥5,000 per payment historically) with a higher annual ceiling. For big-ticket purchases split the payment or use cash.
Which app should I choose — Alipay or WeChat Pay?+
Install both — they are free. Alipay's tourist features and English UI are slightly stronger; WeChat is where mini-programs (Didi, delivery) live.
Can I get a refund if a merchant overcharges?+
QR payments carry a full transaction record in-app; open the order, tap 'contact merchant', or dispute via the card issuer as a last resort.
